The Descent
After our moderately disappointing experience with Session 9 Friday night, suicideblonde & I decided to watch The Descent. Now this is a fucking horror movie! Seriously! Possibly one of the best horror movies I’ve ever watched. Top 3 favourite things about this epically awesome movie:
#1: The monsters! I’m a big monster fan. My first horror movie experience was with Freddy Krueger, so I learned at a very young age to fear the monster. The crawlers were terrifying. The first time one appeared full on screen I screamed like I’ve never screamed. The second time one popped up I screamed louder. I didn’t cry out in surprise or shout in thrilled excitement, I screamed. I was honestly freaked out. There was even a point after the monsters were revealed and before I really got a good look at one where I thought I was maybe too scared and would have to turn the movie off, and I never give up on horror movies. After some close-up shots, after we learned how they operated, what their weaknesses were, I felt a little safer and kept on keeping on, but hoo-boy, it was touch and go there for about 15 minutes.
#2: The atmosphere! Darkness, close spaces, a completely unknown and unsafe land to attempt to escape mutated animal monster men. Deep down in an undiscovered cave may be one of the best horror movie locales since the rural farmhouse.
#3: The all-girl cast! When those fierce bitches started going all warrior-women on their predators I was delighted. I loved seeing women fight hardcore ala Buffy or Beatrix Kiddo. They were scared, but they were strong. They were damaged, but they were smart. I also loved that not one scene was sexually gratuitous. The women were all powerful and necessary, unique characters.
Loved the set-up, the fantastic amount of bloody gross gore, the characters, and I thought both the original UK ending and the slightly edited US ending were great. Not one complaint with this movie. As far as horror movies go, it was my idea of perfection.
My favorite horror movie. Ever.
I also like the word fuckery.
